Mindful Learning: Making the Body-Brain Connection

Keith L. PentzConnect early childhood professionals from across the country for a week-long online discussion with Keith Pentz. Mr. Pentz, National Education Advisor for Kaplan, has been in the field of education for nearly 30 years. He has experience in infant, toddler, kindergarten, and elementary classrooms. He has also been involved in a variety of early childhood research and hands-on programs—specifically regarding play therapy and play as a strategy for the development of cognitive processes. Beginning Monday, June 2 participants can go to our Web site to join the discussion.


Technology Training for Early Childhood Administrators – Intermediate Level Course

training participantLast chance to register! This course provides intermediate instruction to computer technology as an administrative tool in the management of child care programs. Lab sessions will be held at NLU's North Shore Campus in Room 627 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Additional content will be delivered online. Topics include: Creating electronic forms with Microsoft Word 2007; constructing complex spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel 2007; designing promotional materials with Microsoft Publisher 2007; and building databases with Microsoft Access 2007. Funding is provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). Participant portion of the training cost is only $75. This fee includes instruction, textbook, flash drive, and training materials. Scholarships are available. Participants may also receive two semester hours of graduate credit from National-Louis University (ECE535, Technology in Child Care Administration II) by paying an additional $578. Summer Institute: August 4-9, 2008

training participantsJoin the ranks of over 400 directors in Illinois who have taken part in this extraordinary professional development experience. Taking Charge of Change is guaranteed to transform how you think about your role as an early childhood leader. Training begins with a six-day residential institute August 4-9, 2008 at the McCormick Tribune Center for Early Childhood Leadership in Wheeling. Topics focus on individual and organizational change and the director's role as change agent. A comprehensive model for improving the quality of early childhood programs is presented. A follow-up retreat will be held November 13-15, 2008 where participants report on their progress in implementing a program improvement plan. Taking Charge of Change culminates with four days of training in conjunction with Leadership Connections in May 2009.

This training opportunity is limited to 28 participants. Priority is given to early childhood administrators of DCFS-licensed and license-exempt programs serving low-income children. Funding has been provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services. Participants' portion is only $400 for all housing, food, texts, and materials. Application deadline is June 23, 2008. Taking Charge of Change Train-the-Trainer

Eileen Eisenberg & colleaguesThe McCormick Tribune Center for Early Childhood Leadership has received funding again this year to sponsor eight trainers to join us for our Taking Charge of Change leadership training. The goal of our Train-the-Trainer initiative is to develop a cadre of informed and experienced trainers who can implement the components of the Taking Charge of Change training model to support the leadership development of early childhood center directors in other states. The target audience for this Train-the-Trainer initiative is community college instructors, supervisors of multi-site programs, trainers and technical assistance specialists who work for resource and referral agencies, and organization development consultants who support directors' quality enhancement endeavors. The Next Generation of Chicago Leaders

Janis JonesThe Next Generation of Chicago Leaders project, funded by the McCormick Tribune Foundation, is an advanced leadership training program designed for seasoned professionals. Experienced directors and education coordinators of nonprofit and for-profit early childhood programs in Chicago are encouraged to apply. This unique opportunity will be limited to 18 individuals who have exhibited leadership potential and have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the quality of care and education for young children.

This 10-month professional development experience provides a structured opportunity for participants to build and refine their coaching and mentoring skills, expand their knowledge about professional development resources, and develop individualized professional development plans for their teachers. All training costs, books and materials, on-site technical assistance by faculty, and food and lodging for attendance at the Leadership Connections conference will be covered for participants selected to be part of this professional development initiative.
