Dear Tracy: Yes, the term "probationary" period comes straight from collective bargaining agreements. It is appropriate for unionized workplaces, and hence inappropriate for union-free environments. I much prefer the term "orientation" because it in no way implies that at the end of the period the employee somehow attains a permanent employment status.
