Dear Margaret: You are confused about the term "exempt." Our previous discussions about exempt versus non-exempt have nothing to do with tax exemptions.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act -- which is the basic federal statute governing wage/hour law -- employees are classified as either "exempt" or "non-exempt" for purposes of eligibility for receiving overtime. I strongly urge you do some research on employee classifications. A good place to start would be the federal Department of Labor's website: www.dol.gov
