In our session we discussed many ways to take the interview past face-to-face. One of the ways to do this is to have a writing component of some type. You could ask for them to write their philosophy on child care, "what if" questions, or have them document a classroom observation. This will help give you an idea of their ability to communicate in the written form. I think we have all had someone interview well and then find out later they are unable to communicate with parents in written form. We also discussed having a hiring team and letting peers interview potential staff. I really like this idea. I feel it would help them feel more a part of the organization if they had some input in the decision of who is hired. This might also give them some idea of how hard it is to pick the right person.
