I enjoyed your training at the Leadership Connections Conference, Holly.
As a director providing a reference, I am happy when I am able to speak freely and not be confined to dates of employment. Conversely, when I am looking to hire, I want as much information from the former employer as possible to make a good decision. When staff resign, I typically receive a personal notice, and ask if they wish to use me as a reference in the future. In addition, I ask employees who are leaving to complete and sign a simple form giving me permission to provide a reference when asked. Areas covered include attendance, job performance, disciplinary actions and salary history. If they indicate "no", I simply state to the prospective employer that the former employee has not given me permission to release information regarding that area. If the resigning employee does not sign the release form, I limit myself to the dates of hire.
