Termination and Change of Status

As a year round child care program we transition to a new school year in June. As we approach the end of the school year we have discussions with staff about staffing in the next school year. A few of our teachers let us know they want to terminate in August in time to return to school or begin a job in the public school. We don't want to place them in a full time/full year classroom for the new school year since we know they will leave at the end of summer and are concerned about consistency for children and families. Therefore, we have been asking them to consider voluntary termination at the end of the current school year. We then offer them a change in status to temporary (seasonal, substitute). We try to employ them in our prek summer camp program that ends in August or use them as a substitute throughout the summer. Up until now, our teachers have understood this and have agreed. What if they did not to and wanted to keep their current school year position through summer? If I terminate them, will I be responsible for unemployment? We self-insure.
