Providing references for non-citizens

The Patriot Act has restricted a number of rights of people living in this country, who are not citizens. As you watch the nightly news (in all your free time...right?), you cannot miss the ongoing controversy about the rights of resident aliens.

For Maria, who hires employees from other countries to teach in her French language program, you need to treat your temporary non-resident employees the same way you would a resident employee. Invite them to sign a "hold harmless" statement. That way, no matter what happens, you can feel more secure if called for a future reference. The non-resident ex-employee may not have the same right to sue you as an American citizen would. However, why take the risk?
