The ethics of unemployment compensation

Let's face it. Sometimes ex-employees with a poor performance record may still qualify for unemployment compensation. Your program ends up paying. This can smart like an injustice.

However, from a public policy perspective, the former employee is not "out on the street", while seeking other employment.

Here is practical advice from an unemployment compensation adjudicator. This decision-maker spoke to directors in one of my classes and said:

1) Bring your organized documentation of the past employee's "case" with you; and,

2) Dress and behave professional, even if offended by what the former employee claims in the hearing.

Your professionalism may carry the day.
