CONSCIENTIOUS RESCUE EFFORT

Your program's practice is right in line w/ what the courts call making a "conscientious rescue effort." Courts encourage employers to:

1) Tell the employee what is not being done correctly;

2) Tell the employee what corrective action needs to be taken;

3) Develop a plan for improvement, accompanied by "enhanced supervision"; and

4) Closely supervising and documenting this process.

When this process is done well, the employee gets the message to shape up or you know what. The practical challenge is that many of us are softies and hope that things will just change for the better, without having to be "hard" on a staff member. The concept of "tough love" applies here.
