Our center policy is that all reference questions be answered very simply. I can answer questions about when the employee started, date they left, job responsibilities, age group they worked primarily with. I do not answer wage questions, questions about dependability or any personality questions. I do not feel I really am able to give out any useful information to future employers. When asked if I would rehire I sometimes say yes if that is true other wise I hope the caller can tell by my pause what the answer is. I feel when I call about references the same is true that I am not getting any real useful information. I always mail out references besides calling. Sometimes I do get more information when those are returned.
I have received great phone references on future employeess, hired them, then was very disappointed. If the employee leaves my employment or I terminate them I sometimes call the former employer back to see why they gave such a good reference. I have been told they were afraid not to.
