Thank you, Barb, for expanding on all the flaws in the current practice of getting and giving references.
When asked to give a reference on a past employee, many employers fear the consequences of telling the truth.
Let's hope that the pendulum will swing back, as it usually does, to ensure that references can and will be meaningful again.
I am in the practice of requiring a "hold harmless" statement from anyone who asks me to serve as her reference. That way, I feel i can tell the truth.
