Linda I don't have any research on home visits but do have personal experience---In our Head Start and Pre-k programs, we deal with a number of children from dangerous home environments due to abuse, drugs, etc. Here are some of the practices that we have instituted: 1) always use the team approach and never go to a home alone. 2) remain in a visible place--on the poarch, etc. or meet in a public place like McDonalds, etc. 3) always alert someone that you are going to be visiting with a particular family---either colleagues, local officials, or center/school administrators---and request that they check to see that you have returned in a predetermined amount of time. 4) make sure that you take your cell phone with you. 5) some home visits aren't safe no mattter what you do and you simply need to accept that and work around home visits for your own personal safety. Hope this helps.
