One more thing - all learning happens best when it is in the "here and now". By using research to explain this concept, we can hopefully help teacher training efforts to focus on what teachers can do to help children become avid, engaged learners everyday for the intrinsic value of learning and not to achieve some future goal. I hope this helps to clarify my first answer.
