I think about this often, as to how much of a disconnect we have between many of the early childhood center philosophy's and practices vs what the children are moving into when they get to first grade and up. It seems that the focus becomes strictly academic and that we lose sight of allowing the child to learn through play, and social engagement. I understand how important academics are when the child enters the primary school system, however somehow I wish we did not have such strict guidelines. It seems like often we are measuring strictly how much homework the child completes adn how many answers they get correct instead of helping them to understand other important avenues that are so important to learn about at this young age. (i.e. social skills)
