Julie,

Pre-K is FREE to all! Private centers MAY NOT charge for Pre-K. So, if a center charges --say $150/week-- tuition for the 4 year old classroom, they can no longer charge for that classroom. However....the loophole is that they can still charge for before or afterschool care. For example, in Georgia: Pre-K is 6.5 hours each day. So, say...from 8:00 - 2:30. Those hours are funded by the lottery. However, if care is needed before or after that, the center may charge. They may also charge for holidays (as GA Pre-K follows the academic calendar) and summers. So, each center receives the alloted amount per child (based on location and teacher credentials) for the Pre-K portion. If other services are provided, then the center may charge what they deem appropriate.

If you have time, skim the guidelines for GA Pre-K at www.decal.state.ga.us

Let me know if you have other questions about GA Pre-K. I'll do my best to answer them.

Loretta :)
