I have been faced with the same dilemma with parents wanting their children to focus on the academics. It seems that most of the parents who I have in my center that are teachers or a related field understand the importance of social skill building for their child versus the academics at such an early age. It is our job as caregivers/educators to expose the children to as much as they are capable of understading and making it fun. Teaching the parents the value of both is a daunting task. We need to encourage parents to read to their children and converse with them as often as possible and reassure them that the language and reading skills will come when the child is developmentally ready.
