the standards in the self-study workbook are written in language that encourages providers to think intentionally about the standard itself, what it means, why it's important, and how they can demonstrate that they meet the standard.
The standards in the self-certification are the same standards, but the language is slightly different so that it's observable. The self-certified standards are exactly the same book that the observer uses and this helps providers know the kinds of things the observer is looking for. In addition, there are some standards that might be intrusive for an observer to see so the provider is asked to self-certify these. Some examples of those things that the provider self-certifies are first aid kits and smoke detectors. The observer checks to see if there are smoke detectors and a first aid kit. The provider certifies the contents of the first aid kit and verifies that the smoke detectors work.
